Luke Wilkshire’s Dynamo Moscow have defeated Volga 2-1 overnight to book a place in the final of the Russian Football Cup. Despite conceding an early goal, Dynamo were able to score two late goals in the 73rd and 86th minute to set up a clash with Rubin Kazan on May 9 at the Central Stadium in Yekaterinburg.
Socceroo defender Luke Wilkshire, who has been at Dynamo Moscow since 2008, was stoked to progress through to the final.
“The game was not one of our better performances, but most importantly we got the win and are now in the cup final. As we expected, Volga were defensive and played on the break. It was a case of us being patient and creating opportunities,” Wilkshire said.
Despite trailing 1-0 with 20 minutes to go, Wilkshire said there was no need to panic, and he believed the goals would come.
“We had changed our tactics from the beginning of the game which maybe made us a little disjointed at the start. But we persisted with the game plan and came through in the end.
“It was nice to play in good conditions. Not too cold!”.
In the Russian Premier League, Zenit have run away from the pack and hold a nine-point advantage over second placed CSKA Moscow. However, only four points currently separate second and sixth, and Wilkshire is confident that Dynamo can string together a few wins and finish in second.
“Zenit have all but won the league, but there are five teams fighting it out for second and third. We are one of them, and hopefully we can finish at the top of this bunch,” Wilkshire said.
Dynamo Moscow will face Anzhi away this Sunday.
